Why would I get an Android mobile phone?

By Bill Tower

Android has made superb progress since 2005 when Google bought a relatively unknown company called Android Inc. For over 10 years Google opened up the OS and let anyone download, change, personalize, use and distribute it free of charge.

Freedom stands out as the keyword that sets apart Android from all competing smartphones on the market. Apple keeps a tyrannical like clutch on its 'I' product and Blackberry isn't much different. In contrast you are free to install any app you want with an Android phone. The app marketplace is not restricted to what someone in a review department deems to be acceptable.

Because of this level of liberty, application designers are ditching Apple and embracing the liberty which developing for Android delivers. Currently there are thousands of programs available, a lot of them are even practical! For example, the standard messaging app is nothing to scream about on the Android nonetheless it doesn't have to be because there are over a dozen free of charge apps which you could download that can replace the built in messaging app. This degree of personalization and choice isn't available on other smartphones where the makers want to tie you down to only their applications.

Since it is easier for programmers to make applications and because there is more competition you will find that many applications that you have to purchase on the iPhone and Blackberry are free on the Android, or at least you can find a free 'lite' version offered therefore you are saving on the expense of personalizing your smartphone.

If you are anything like the common Web surfer you almost certainly use several Google web services like Gmail, Gtalk, Drive and Search. While you can use these services on other phones, the Android OS has built applications that integrate and sync effortlessly with your Android. For example, say you add a completely new contact to your address book, Android is intelligent enough to update your Google contacts list so if you ever misplace your phone then all of your important contact information is stored in Google's cloud services.

Protection is probably a significant issue and with smart phone usage increasing, scammers and unlawful gangs are actively seeking to gain access to the private information individuals store on their mobile phones.. Though you could get some great protection for Android there is no doubt that Google has constantly got your back using its remote kill switch ability to remove any rogue programs that could have discovered their way onto your phone.

Lastly there is the important factor of choice. With an iPhone you are tied to one device, not very good if you would like to express oneself. The Blackberry targets businesses and the designs are not even close impressing. Alternatively since the Android OS is a free operating-system that can be used without royalties, many significant cell phone companies are coming up with Android based smartphones. You now have a choice of model, choice of styles, choice of functions and most significantly find a smartphone that fits the budget.
