What is Cell Phone Unlocking?

By Harold Dubie

Information about Cell Phone Unlocking

It seems like it was only fifteen or twenty years ago when having a cell phone was a rare luxury which only a relatively few people could enjoy. Over the years since then, however, cell phone usage has spread to the majority of the population, to the point that hardly anyone can function without one. The majority of people that say they need their cell phone greatly appreciate the extra degree of freedom that cell phones allow. On the other hand, much of this freedom is somewhat compromised when some carrier networks lock certain cell phones into using only their networks.

While people love the fact that they can go almost anywhere and have a means of communication with their loved ones, people just as much appreciate having the freedom to switch their cell phone service provider whenever they want or need to. There are many different reasons why someone would want to go from their present cell service provider to another, from not being totally satisfied with its quality or calling plans, to needing to relocate or cut costs. With software locks placed on the cell phone devices, however, people are thus restricted to using the network of the particular service provider through whom they bought the phone. This is the primary reason why countless people have undergone processes to have their cell phones unlocked, thereby giving them the freedom to go to any network they wish.

If you are considering having your cell phone unlocked, you must first determine whether it actually can be unlocked or not. Whereas most of the cell phone companies in the U.S. use the CDMA networks, the majority of those in other countries use GSM networks. The devices from one network will not function on the other network, although there is not much difference between them, as far as actual use goes. Unfortunately for the most cell phone users in the U.S., only cell phones that use GSM networks and have SIM cards are capable of being unlocked.

There are a few different ways in which you can go about unlocking your cell phone. Some cell phones can be unlocked easily using a simple key code, while many others must use special processes that require firmware designed to rewrite their operating software. You will very likely be able to find resources that you can use without cost, no matter which unlocking method your phone requires. Despite this, it still might be more advantageous for you to pay someone with more experience to unlock the phone for you.

There are countless websites where you can obtain your cell phone model's unlock codes, for either a small fee or no cost at all. Many websites also provide services to unlock your cell phone for you, regardless of the method required. To locate the best service, you should take your time to research and compare the options that are available to you.
