How Old Small Business Telephone Services Can Weigh Companies Down

By Donnell G. Glover

There are some things that may shock people about small business telephone services. These vital pieces of infrastructure are often disregarded in an office as people just assume that there is no option to change or upgrade them. Things have now changed completely to the point where there are many choices to suit any use or need within the office. These can be very advantageous to both the operations and the costs of the company.

Something that can be surprising to learn about small business telephone services is that they don't have to be limited to a physical line. Internet phones, known as Voice over IP systems, work on the basis that the voice signals are briefly turned into digital signals instead. These are moved along the broadband connection to the main exchange where they are converted back to regular phone signals that can be forwarded on. This doesn't affect anything externally, making it work just as a standard phone would for all callers.

Another thing that might be a revelation to those without access to the finances is that landlines cost a huge amount of money each month. It costs a large amount to simply have a landline open, not including the additional costs for each call. Businesses often expect it to be cheaper to run, given the fact that there really isn't much to be done on a landline other than talk. Sadly, many people are mislead into paying more for these PBX telephone systems just because they don't understand that there are other options.

Anyone who has used hardwired small business telephone systems knows how uncompromising they can be. This may be more noticeable today because of the cellular phone. With a landline phone number, any business calls coming in out of hours could be missed, leading to forgotten business opportunities. It might be welcome news to know that there are systems that are more flexible than this. Internet phones can be configured to auto-forward, and some software can be logged into from outside of the office so that the phone operates from any computer. All that is required is a computer, Internet access and the right passwords to access everything.

It is normal to be surprised by these bits of information - VoIP phone lines are still very new. Despite its swift growth in the last 2 years, people are still learning what the technology can do for them. Now is the time to start learning more, as it is suggested that as many as three quarters of business will use digital phones in the next year.
